MIST DAY 3

DAY 3 – Most Mistified

It was finally time for the final official day of MIST – the awards ceremony. Everyone was thankful and we all agreed that it would be a good day. Why? Because not only did White Oaks perform well and enjoy themselves the days before, we also got to sleep in a few extra hours (we didn’t have to show up for the bus until 3:15!).
After waking up at 9:30, I got up and checked the MIST group chat, only to find that everyone was freaking out about who was going to wear what- colors, patterns, ties, suits, scarves, dresses – Everyone was being super indecisive. Me personally, I don't have a problem, I’ll just wear whatever’s acceptable. But this whole clothes drama went on for hours before everyone finally decided on something. I had the choices between a red, blue, or black shirt, and settled on going all black.
Once we got to WOSS, it was pretty empty, we were the first ones there. However, once people really started filling in, I immediately started getting excited—everyone was dressed at 15/10. Everyone. in other words, was looking A1 :D
We set out for the awards, where we blasted music on the speakers, everyone singing English, Arab, and Hindi music, having a good time. Eventually though it got a little crazy when the girls all started yelling about the songs they wanted or didn’t want—to the point where we were border lining a riot and we had to shut off the music…
But it was OKAY, because literally seconds later, we were pulling into the awards building.  We stepped out and met up with the seniors from their bus and instantly started banging on the tabla and began roaring. Within minutes, the entire banquet hall knew that White Oaks had arrived.  There were a bunch of photographers inside, along with the stage, and it was filled with seats. We were escorted to the back right of the room and after dropping off our stuff, went off to get our own little photo shoot done!
Soon enough, the room was filled and every seat was occupied. The MCs walked onto stage and the entire room went wild.

There are no words to express how much energy was in the room—Honestly the WOSS Science Fair Team should have thought of making a way to use the power in the room for electricity. Haha, anyways they got our room to quiet down (somehow) and we immediately started, first by calling up a young man, a former hip hop artist, who presented a spoken word that left me, and the rest of the audience in shivers.

The amazing speech was followed by the top three scoring short films (which were a blast to watch) and then we finally began the awards ad performances that everyone was looking so forward to. It was incredible to watch the awards get called up-- different schools cheering and people going up to accept their awards. Every time WOSS was called out we stood up and cheered, showing the entire auditorium just how spirited we really were.
And then they prepared the award for Most Mistified. The audience cheered in belief that their school would be the one to win—And when they called the Wildcats to the stage, our cheers were louder than ever in the competition, everyone screaming “White Oaks, White Oaks!” as the ambassadors collected the honor from the stage.
We breaked for prayer and for food to take a short break, got some oily slices of pizza, and then decided we’d order pizza later that evening. The hype train was rolling fast, and wasn’t going to stop anytime soon. More and more WOSS Wildcats picked up awards.
My squad personally was enjoying ourselves thoroughly, even though many of us didn’t get awards as one of us was calling out at the judges and we got a kick out of his reactions to their “bipolar behavior bull”. We all took turns, guessing which schools were going to win what award—Would it be MUA, IFS, RH? We all placed bets (friendship dollars) and made it an incredibly big deal, cheering embarrassingly for every time we guessed correctly. That one fact alone made the night incredibly cheery-regardless of whether WOSS won an award or not.
That isn’t to say we didn’t win—because we kept ourselves up there. The Science Fair team, French Essay, and Social Media, were some of the teams who came out successfully. Not to mention, our amazing MIST ambassadors this year, and girls’ basketball team, all picking up their awards with pride.

The bus ride home was a party, yet again, this time more than ever. We blasted music on the speakers, put up a disco ball for a little bit, danced, sang songs, chanted for White Oaks, performed rap battles against each other (where there were some pretty fire bars shot), and just had an absolute blast.

There are no words in English to describe the experience, so I’m going to put it into some words you might never have heard at all—but words that are definitely going to work.

Mashallah – We had so much talent go out from WOSS these past few days
Alhamdulillah – We did phenomenally, coming undefeated till the end in bowl, coming first in a handful of competitions, and picking up awards and spirit points on the way.
Subhanallah- It was an amazing trip, and the muslim student spirit still roars, and continues to grow
Inshallah – The MIST competitions in the future will continue to grow and become more hyped each year
White Oaks did amazing this year, and this was a MIST that I will never forget. I don't know a single person who isn’t excited and already hyped for next year and the years to come.  If you can go, make it your mission to go.

MIST DAY 2

DAY 2 – The Champions

Surprisingly, the second day of MIST, essentially was supposed to be the most hyped day, but it was actually unimaginably tense. People were studying tirelessly for their competitions, practicing for their presentations and performances, and just working hard. It was good to see everyone’s determination. My presentations were over, for me the hard part was done. So, it was my time to cheer on the others and to help where I could.
We got to the university in the same way we had on the first day, with everyone hyped and ready to show them what we were made of. An hour after that, the team competitions began. I made my way over to where the Social Media teams were presenting their social media sites (my interests lay with technology). They absolutely crushed the competition.
There was no other way to go about looking at things. After the first presentation, which, to be kind, was trash, I knew, and so did the rest of us, that White Oaks had this one in the bag. I pulled out my phone and texted everyone to get their butts in the lecture hall and to watch the rest of the performances. And once WOSS started talking, it was clear that we’d done no less that brilliantly.
We all cheered and chanted, to take some pressure off of them, and after it was over, we told them just how amazingly they did. As it ended though, we all scattered, rushing off to cheer on whoever else we could find. The sisters rushed to see the Sister’s Nasheed competition, while some of the brothers and I ran to catch extemporaneous speaking, where Omar M’Hiri was spitting fire. From the circulation of news, we did brilliantly all around. Omar’s speaking was extraordinary and the sisters’ nasheed was lit. The sisters pulled a performance where they not only performed in English, they also performed in French and in sign language.
The Science Fair participants were no less high achieving—news spread quickly about how the WOSS Science Fair group had dominated their competition as well with their thermal energy charger. Even our debate team, arguably the best debate team around, was crushing their competition, shutting down any points that opposed their own. All of which was stunning to witness. Now that’s deserving of a real mashallah. Well done guys.

Nobody can deny that the second day of MIST was stressful for everyone, but I have to say, it was almost a burden for our MIST Bowl team. They worked for months on end, reading information and practicing, reviewing information, and testing each other on all the different categories that they had to learn. The preliminary rounds yesterday had gone well, with White Oaks placing first.
And today, again, White Oaks spent their time studying and working hard.
The results of which showed in the quarter finals, when white oaks took first place again.
They went back to their rooms and studied some more.
And then at the Semi Finals, again White Oaks placed first in their competition.

Then they went back to our room and studied some more, cramming and reviewing as much as they could before the end. The rest of us took a quick break to eat food and then paraded over to the ES building where we took our places to watch the MIST Bowl finals.
All the way to the end, White Oaks’ Mist Bowl team scrambled their opposition, continuously devouring the first place spot. We’re all proud of them and couldn’t have asked for more. In the finals they fought hard, and it was an incredibly feat to watch, even if we didn’t come first in the end. Undefeated to the very end, we couldn’t be prouder of these guys.
Throughout the day, we all witnessed and competed in amazing performances, dazzling our judges and showing them exactly what it meant to be a White Oaks Wildcat – That it was no small task, and that we were spirited and were ready to win no matter how hard it was—and that if we fell short, we were hungry for more and would return stronger than ever. And I believe that with everything I’m made of and I'm sure everyone at MIST2k16 does too.

The second day of competitions had finally come to an end and everyone got onto the busses and we began driving back home. This time, none of us were exhausted. Instead, we were hyped beyond words, cheering and chanting “White Oaks”, spitting bars and songs left and right, in celebration of the immense fun, and accomplished day that we’d just been a part of. In other, simpler terms, it was lit.

MIST DAY 1

DAY 1 – The Road to Happiness

The morning was cold, the sky still dark, but the energy was unusually high. The bare trees were sullen, and the air frosty, the roads empty, but the spirits flew. It was not the world around us, but it was us ourselves that shone, as it was the first day of MIST.
I made plans to carpool to White Oaks Secondary School, my high school, where we’d all be meeting up to get onto a bus and then to Toronto, where we would be taking part in one of the biggest interscholastic tournaments that come to mind. I dressed up in a suit, grabbed my artwork and got into the car, ready for what faced us at the end of the road.
MIST is an interscholastic tournament where students come with their special skills, talents, and knowledge of all different kinds (writing, speaking, debating, filming, yelling, crafting, drawing, cooking, programming, etc) and compete to come out on top. I was competing for the finals in 2D Art, and had just spend the night finishing it up.

MIST was being held in Toronto, at the University of Toronto. The bus ride there was tame, the guys and I all sat back and played cards, while the girls did their own thing. BUT after we arrived, we got down, and started our chant. Walking into the building, screaming at the top of our lungs:

“….WHITE….OAKS………..WHITE OAKS!”

We were lead upstairs into a large white room, where we all took our seats and were given wristbands for entree back onto the grounds after leaving as well as MIST IDs so that we were identifiable. Following that, I followed one of the coaches (who happened to be an amazing person, SHOUT OUT TASNEEM) to one of the other buildings where me and another friend of mine submitted our entrees for our Arts Competitions.
After all the submissions were done, we made our way to a large hall, where our school was residing, and began practising our chants, and just relaxing overall. Some people were practising for their competitions, so I decided to do the same while we waited for the MIST Orientation to start. Soon enough, other schools began filing in and within moments, we were locked in a chant battle- each school competing against the other for who’s chant was louder than the others.

During the orientation, they talked about the etiquette and expectations they had for us, and for the most part it was all standard stuff. This was also when the roof nearly exploded because they finally announced the wifi password to everyone. After that, we had a few hours to do whatever we wanted and so we were let out early.
We were starving, none of us had eaten breakfast since we all had to arrive at WOSS originally at 6:30 in the morning. So what did we do? We went out. It was me and two of my guy friends, and as we walked, we decided to make plans to go to the theatres as well. So, while the Brackets Orientations happened, we went to Tim Horton’s and ate. Then, we made our long 20 minute walk through Toronto and went to the Cineplex theaters to catch Deadpool.
Once we got to the steps, my pocket buzzed and pulled out my phone, only to fine 6 missed calls and 4 different text messages, all asking about where I had disappeared to and why I wasn’t with them (Base MIST Squad).  I typed my response quickly and called them back. They were super upset that I was going to go watch Deadpool with the guys instead of enjoy MIST for what it was—the way I saw it, I had three hours before my competition, so what was the harm? Regardless, I yielded to their request since I’d seen Deadpool. The other two really wanted to see it (let’s call them Rosey and Meez). They’d never seen it, so I bought their tickets, and told them I was going back.
They were immediately concerned as well, and honestly so was I. The idea of walking through a city I didn’t know, for almost half an hour alone, to get to a place I didn’t know the location of wasn’t an appealing one. But this wasn’t the time to upset anyone. I didn’t want to ruin this for Rosey or Meez, and I didn’t want to let down my Base Squad, so I wrote down some directions and walked out of the theater, and made my way back alone.
On the way back, I continuously got texts from about 4 people a billion times worrying about me, but I managed to get back without getting lost. I curved around streets, and cut through some colleges, until I finally found a street that I recognised. As I started to get my hopes up again that ‘no I’m not going to get lost in the 6ix’ I saw a street musician playing his violin and gave him some change. I don’t know why I did it, I just appreciated the music I guess. Plus… I took a cool pic of the ROM.

When I finally got back, without getting lost once, I called my friends and regrouped with them. After that, we got back into the thick of what MIST really was. We prayed Duhr, and then watched some  Brothers’ Improv teams perform which were hilarious.
After busting my gut we rushed to the MIST Bowl Preliminary round, and cheered on our team. Shout out to Ahmad. Iman, Fatima, Mohammad, Aiman, and Omar who absolutely dominated, by several hundreds of points, winning first in every round, easily qualifying for the quarter finals that would be tomorrow.
And then it happened…The biggest chant battle I have ever witnessed in my life…(vid was too large guys, find it on my instagram @hamza.b2k)

Next up was my own 2D Art Presentation, and I was super happy with the way the presentation went. I got amazing feedback and was super confident in how I could make my art better. I’d only wanted to make the finals, and it seemed that I would and I was thrilled. Next year, I’d go for the gold. My judge was really into my aesthetic and asked me to message him in the future for tips on my artwork…I’ve made connections and wallahi that’s amazing, and it was such a blessing.
Following that epic achievement, Base Squad and I went out to buy dinner, but we ran out of time and I had to run back to perform again for the 2D Art Finals. I Still did okay for the last presentation, but it wasn’t as good as the first one. I knew I wouldn’t place top 3, but I still got amazing feedback and seriously learned from that whole experience.
Aside from that, I heard that debate was absolutely blazing. It sucks that I missed it, but for whoever didn’t…lucky you. And that was MIST day 1—an absolute blast. The Bus Ride home was incredible too. I was so tired and exhausted, but no matter how much I tried to sleep, I wasn’t able to. IT WAS LIT.

10 Simple Steps to Master The All Nighter

Maybe it’s to complete homework, maybe it’s to cram for a test or exam, or maybe it’s to finish an assignment that you’ve had weeks to do the night before, because you believe you work well under pressure and are an adrenaline seeking psycho. Whatever the reason, every student understands the struggle, at one point in their career, of having to pull the dreaded all nighter.

Just today I was up all night, working away at artwork for a competition that is in just two days, and now I’m running on nothing but the food in my belly and absolutely no caffeine. The point being, I am the master of the All Nighter, and today I am going to give you 10 tips and tricks on how you can pull an efficient, effective all nighter like a boss.

However, as a DISCLAIMER: All nighters are not the way to go. If you can avoid them, avoid them and do your work on time. These are only to be used if you have absolutely no choice. Consistent all nighters are bad for you, and if you aren’t getting enough sleep, there are some serious short term and long term consequences that are coming your way. So use these tips, but use them only as a last resort. Good Luck.

1.     Plan Your Night

Before you even think about staying up, you need to know why you’re staying up. Write down all the things you need to complete in the night on a to do list—this can be steps you have to take to finish everything efficiently or it can be just a list of things to do—either way, the list is crucial to your success since you’ll be able to track your progress as you go by crossing off each bullet as the night goes on.
You should also decide the time frame of your night. Are you going to be going from 7Pm until 4Am? Or are you just going to go for it and not stop working until you’re finished everything? Whatever you decide, make sure that you have the speed, efficiency, and time to get it all done. If you tell me you want to start and complete a hyper realistic 16x14 Oil painting from scratch in a 10 hour time span…Good luck. To make sure you don't screw up your planning for the night, here are some things to take into consideration:
·         Set realistic goals—you aren’t superman, and you aren’t a machine. Gauge how long it may take you to do something based on how fast you can work, not how fast you want to work.
·         Understand that you are going to get tired and exhausted—it’s almost guaranteed that since you’re not
sleeping, your body will feel tired and you will not work as fast as you may do when you’re well rested
·         Do you even need to stay up all night? – An all nighter is good occasionally, but it’s possible that you can get everything done before long and still be asleep.
If you follow all of these tricks, you’ll be organised and feeling like a boss, READY to take on the beast that is The All Nighter.

2.     Prepare Your Arsenal

This one is slightly straightforward, and ties into the first tip. You should keep a list of thing’s you’ll need for the night—tools you might need (pencils, paper, eraser, paint, calculator, etc.) to complete what you need to do. Make sure you have everything before you start so that you aren’t running around like a headless chicken in between your work period, and thus you’ll be more efficient.

3.     Get Rid of Distractions

Your arsenal of tools is ready, and you’re ready to begin…But your phone buzzes and you just realise you have some messages and texts and notifications from all of your social media (because goodness, you are so popular). It’s probably okay to reply just before you start working right? So you begin to unlock your phone when
BAM !!!
I slap the dang thing out of your hand!! CAUSE NO!
Do NOT engage in social media while you’re working. Why? Because it’ll likely go down like this:
:
You unlock your phone and begin responding to everything you just got—let’s say 10-20 minutes are gone. Then your friends reply back. And so do you. And the next thing you know, you’re in a fully heated conversation about saving the Polar Bears and whether Donald Drumpf’s hair is real or not. You look up, and its 1:00 Am. Nice. You just wasted hours of your time talking to friends.
Having these distractions available are incredible efficiency killers. Even if you aren’t going on in a complete conversation, checking social media whenever you get a notification in between your work will shave hours off of your night and you’re going to be working slower and getting less done.
So tell everyone you’re going to go work (so nobody thinks you R-Bombed them) and then put your phone on silent, sign out of all social media, put away your video games, go somewhere alone and close the door to block out any other people in your surrounding area (home, library, etc) and then get to work. Keeping your distractions gone is the way to a productive night. Good Luck.

4.     Do Not Stress Out

You have a solid plan, you have your tools, and you’re completely rid of distractions. You are prepared and you need to believe it. If while you’re working through the night, you think you can’t possibly finish everything, you can either continue and hope it all works out, or make adjustments to your schedule to make it work. Remember to prioritize and get the most important information or work done first. If you feel like it’s too much, then it probably is. Just do your best, and keep a high head and stay positive. You will get through this, because if a 15 year old kid like me can, you sure as hell can too.

5.     Keep Yourself Hydrated and Healthy

Now this one might come as a bit of a surprise to some people, because it’s also a fact that eating while studying slows you down. However, I cannot stop reiterating how important it is to understand that you ARE human. You need to keep your body nourished so that it does not wear out and fail on you as you’re trying to cram sesh like a boss. Make absolutely sure that you have some greens and colour fruits and vegetables as a part of your arsenal. You have to make sure that you are eating them and keeping your body’s vitamin and nutrient content is high. Water is probably way more important. I don't care if you have coffee, or Red Bulls, or any other drink to keep yourself awake as well, you need to have water. The water will keep the caffeine circulating longer inside of you AND it will keep you from feeling heated and dehydrated. It also prolongs the dreaded crash that most caffeine products yield after 1 or 2 hours. Water is number one, so make sure you’re drinking it regularly.  If you want to stay up and NOT feel sick, water and fruits and vegetables are the way to go.

6.     Energize, Energize, Energize

I mentioned that you will probably have some kind of caffeinated or sugary drink to keep you awake as well. And that’s totally fine, but I am an expert on energy drinks, so let me give you a breakdown and what to have to make your all nighters the most efficient:
·         Monster and Red Bull drinks are a no go – These things are linked to screwing up your kidneys and your brain and body and all kinds of ridiculous things. To be properly kept awake you also tend to need several of them to work, and so I STRONGLY URGE YOU to stay away from any energy drinks. These, in my opinion, suck, and should never be used.
·         If you’re going to use coffee, make sure it’s a good quality coffee. You want the effects of the caffeine to work for you, so look for something strong. The stronger the coffee, the less you’ll need to get through the night. Personally, Coffee is my go to. (I usually will take two normal Arabica Blends and then if I intend to stay up really late, I’ll toss in a shot or two of espresso. I also like my coffee really sweet, and I use a little almond milk to give it colour).
·         For tea lovers, teas work too, but try to keep the milk to a minimum. If you need the milk to make the tea work for you, then just make sure you have more tea. The best teas I can think of are NOT green teas—I'm thinking more on the lines of Chai, or black teas.
·         Generally speaking, more caffeine is better, but a word to the wise: Too much will suck for you, mentally, physically and the effects will leave you drained. Your kidneys will be killing you, your stomach will be gassed, and you’ll be in the bathroom regularly throughout the day.
One more thing to keep you awake, on top of the caffeine, is to exercise. Take about 5 minutes every hour or two and do some push ups and jumping jacks. Keep the blood in your body circulating, and make sure you’re stretching often. Being bent over a desk for hours on end can’t be good.

7.     Do NOT Get Comfortable

This has to be one of the BIGGEST killers of the all nighter. Make sure you avoid anything that makes you sleepy. If you can avoid using a study lamp as your only source of light, please do. Turn on as many lights as you can in your room and keep the place as bright as possible. Darkness is bad, and if there is dim lighting you will start to notice that you are getting tired faster. The more light there is, the longer your body will think to stay awake. Another huge destroyer of productivity has to be working from your bed. Yes, I know it’s soft and inviting, and I know you love it, but when you’re trying to work, it is your enemy. Treat is like that annoying kid you don't want to be around—avoid it like the plague. You will almost always fall asleep or slow down by around 60-80% if you are working from a comfortable soft place. Make sure you are working on a chair, preferably a hard, tall one, and at a desk. No laying down. Make yourself as uncomfortable as you can (in terms of work space) and there’s an even less chance of you falling asleep. Do Not Get Comfortable.

8.     Jam Out

This is something that a majority of people already do when they study or are doing work. It is a fact that listening to music while working will boost your efficiency. However, although I said to Jam Out, you should probably refrain from playing lyrical music—so almost any song that has lyrics. Why? Because if you’re singing along as you work, guess what? You’re being less efficient in your work. I recommend that you look into cool lyric free music, and there are a ton that are amazing, and they aren’t limited to just “The Sounds of Nature” (however ambiance of the outside world is DEFINITELY a good one to try out). Dubstep, orchestral music, calm/relaxing, the blues, jazz, or really anything without lyrics will work. Give it a go.

9.     Take Short Breaks

If you’re sitting in front of a computer screen for up to 12 hours without rest, I don't know any other way to tell you this, but you’re not only boosting the amount of radiation that’s getting onto your face, but you’re going to have serious headaches for days and honestly you are going to feel like utter crap. So if cancer, the flu, nausea, and exhaustion aren’t enough to persuade you to take breaks, then you are a complete fool. Take 10-15 minute breaks every two hours. These will work to your advantage and you can take bathroom breaks, wash your face, eat, exercise, and just take the time to recharge. You wont feel like a zombie this way, so it’s definitely worth doing.

10. And Most Importantly…Sleep!

YES! You have finished all your work! Now go sleep like a champ. Any rest you give your body is good. However this is only if you have about two or more hours before you have to get ready for the new day. If you wake up at 5 am normally, and it’s 4 am now, do not sleep. You’ll end up putting yourself into the sleep cycle and waking up before its over will actually make you more tired and exhausted than having stayed up through the night anyways. Sleep is a good thing to do though. If you have the time to do it, do it.

And there you go, you’ve gotten through the night efficiently, memorized everything you needed to know, finished that assignment and you’re ready to get a good grade. AND you’re an expert of the all nighter. Now I’m wishing you good luck with whatever it is you have to do.
